PADK’s Newest Initiative: Tropical Agriculture Research and Training Station (TARTS)

PADK is excited to announce our newest initiative, the Tropical Agriculture Research and Training Station (TARTS)! Tropical Agriculture Research and Training Station works to improve the economic self-sufficiency and health of the people of the Kadey.  TARTS does this by:

  1. Promoting regenerative farming practices to increase the yields of current cash crops.
  2. Growing foods with the strongest biodiversity and disease prevention properties to improve community health.
  3. Teaching communities through demonstrations and workshops how to grow these foods so individuals can learn how to incorporate them into their daily lives and.
  4. Conducting research to support these activities.

Beginning in 2021 PADK pivoted to assisting area farmers become economically self-sufficient and to improve the overall health of the people of the Kadey. Towards this end, TARTS has secured the use of 2 hectares of land on the west side of the former Mount Cameroon Tobacco (MCT) site in Ngotto to use for demonstration crops and as a research station for Robusta café and Cacao.  We also have a shaded nursery and work stations, for use when available, on the property and areexperimenting currently with Vanilla Planifolia, Black Pepper (Piper Nigrum), Turmeric (Curcuma longo), Ylang Ylang, (Cananga Adorata), Fig, Papaya, Corrosol, Sugar Apple, Tamarind, Moringa and numerous vegetables, tubers, and herbs. The TARTS demonstration station is a good opportunity to train and improve yields for local farmers and to give them confidence to grow.

FEATURED INITIATIVE: KADEY SCHOLARSHIP PROJECT

PADK is excited to announce a new partnership with Aid2Empowerment (A2E), a US-based nonprofit, to provide direct financial assistance and ongoing social emotional support to six young women of GBHS Batouri by covering their school fees and school supplies for the academic year of 2019-20. In addition, we will train them during the year on how to start a business to take financial responsibility of themselves for the next year, and help them become more independent in the future.

Our goal this year is to aid six young women, two old members and four new members, by providing them with the mentioned scholarships and trainings. The old members of the club will serve as “big sisters” to the new members, and help their new club members shape their business education. By relying on old members to serve as mentors, we are relying on the assets of the community, its young women, to better the community itself using ABCD. We hope that the old members will further sharpen their skills, the new members will be exposed to new business techniques, and all participants will benefit from further schooling
